Program Overview
The introduction of blockchain technologies—such as cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin—has left trustees and other fiduciaries increasingly responsible for managing estates that contain investments in a growing asset class that challenges conventional notions of a prudently managed investment portfolio. This program will explore what these new technologies are and what they demand of fiduciaries, and it offers guidance on how longstanding investment and related fiduciary duties apply in the shifting landscape governing crypto investments.
Learning Objectives:
Learn what cryptocurrency is and how it can be used for goods, services, and investments
Understand the important aspects of owning cryptocurrency during the client’s lifetime, including maintaining and passing on the “private key”
Evaluate the various ways cryptocurrency can be passed on upon death, including donation to charity
Examine the future of cryptocurrency, including tax consequences involving income tax, estate tax, and gift tax

Robert K. Kirkland. Esq. is the Founding Partner of the law firm of Kirkland Woods & Martinsen LLP, which has offices in Liberty, Missouri, Springfield, Missouri and Overland Park, Kansas. He also advises fiduciaries in estate, conservatorship and trust administration matters.
